Shine Global Launches Kickstarter for 3D BMX Documentary 1 Way Up

Support 1 Way Up on KickstarterNEW YORK, JUNE 26, 2013 – Shine Global, the production company behind the Academy Award® winning documentary short INOCENTE, today announced its Kickstarter for the 3D BMX documentary 1 WAY UP. The film is directed by Amy Mathieson and produced by Albie Hecht.

1 WAY UP in 3D, is the story of Tre and Quillan, two teenage boys on the road to the BMX World Championships. They hope to escape one of the toughest gang neighborhoods in London with the only thing they have – a bike. Defying the stereotypes of “black boys in hoods” and the media portrayal of Peckham, they race to the top of the BMX ranks and off the streets.

The film’s arc follows Tre, Quillan, and CK’s preparation, race victories and defeats, and their interactions with family and friends, all leading up to the World Championships. Their competition mirrors the personal choices each makes as they challenge societal preconceptions of what they can achieve. It’s the story of the determination of two young athletes to defy the stereotype of kids born into poverty, violence, and family stress to strive for their personal best. It is also the story of a coach’s faith in the talent of his riders and his willingness to sacrifice his own career to help them succeed against all odds.

“The 3D, animation, hip-hop, and spoken word are blended together to create an innovative action sports storytelling style that truly brings to life the power of sports to help youth succeed against all odds,” says producer Albie Hecht. “And just like in War/Dance where we nurtured first time feature directors and now Academy Award® winners Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, this film has the freshness and vision of another first time director, Amy Mathieson”

With the help from their dedicated filmmaker Amy Mathieson, Shine Global has been able to shoot the film and edit a rough cut. Proceeds from the Kickstarter will go into a professional sound mix, a special color correction for the 3D, and to output the film into all the formats 1 Way Up needs to screen at festivals, theaters, and events.

Shine Global was able to successfully finish their Oscar®-winning short documentary INOCENTE through Kickstarter, which was the first crowd funded movie to win an Academy Award®.
