ABOUT THE EVENT

In observance of World Day Against Child Labor, Shine Global is hosting a free virtual screening of their 2011 documentary about child labor in the US THE HARVEST (LA COSECHA).  The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with experts and participants in the film – including Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard – who will discuss the current situation of child labor in the US, what is being done to support these children, and what still needs to be done to ensure their safety and futures.

Directed by award-winning photographer and filmmaker U Roberto Romano, THE HARVEST (LA COSECHA) tells the stories of three adolescents who travel with their families across thousands of miles to pick crops in southern Texas, northern Michigan, and northern Florida during the harvest season.  Actor Eva Longoria served as executive producer.

“It’s my sincere hope that this documentary will withstand the test of time to remind future generations that child labor, no matter what industry, is absolutely deplorable and wrong,” said Eva Longoria upon the release of the film in 2011.

That is why Shine Global, the non-profit media company dedicated to giving voice to children and families, has organized this screening and panel discussion on World Day Against Child Labor.  According to the UN, there are an estimated 152 million children in child labor around the world, 72 million of which are in hazardous work. This is an issue in the United States as well, with an estimated 500,000 children working in the fields to harvest the food we all eat. With COVID-19, these children are now at even greater risk and facing even more difficult circumstances.

The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 excluded agriculture allowing children 12-years-old and even younger to pick produce.  Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, who will be speaking on the panel, has authored the CARE Act to change this by increasing the minimum age of child workers to 14-years-old and to end the separate and unequal status farmworker children now endure.  (read more on the CARE Act here).

The panel will also feature Zulema Lopez, who was featured at age 12 in the film, and Norma Flores López who is also a former child farmworker and is now a well-known farmworker rights activist. The discussion will cover issues of child labor presented in the film and efforts in the US to mitigate this practice.

Any donations raised will be shared with the Farmworkers’ COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund set up by Justice for Migrant Women and Hispanics in Philanthropy to help keep farmworker families safe from COVID-19 as they perform “essential” work to feed us.

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40)

In 1992, Lucille Roybal-Allard became the first Mexican-American woman elected to Congress. Last year, she became the first Latina to serve as one of the 12 “cardinals,” or chairs, of a House Appropriations Subcommittee. Congresswoman Roybal-Allard is author of The Children’s Act for Responsible Employment (CARE) to address abusive and exploitative child labor practices in agriculture. She is a prominent advocate for children and families as co-chair of the Maternity Care Caucus, vice chair of the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee, and vice chair of the Task Force on Aging and Families. She is also an original co-author of The Dream Act, which would allow certain U.S.-raised immigrant youth to earn lawful permanent residence and eventual American citizenship. In 2019, she introduced the newest version of this bill: HR 6, The Dream and Promise Act.

Zulema Lopez, Child Rights Activist, Featured in the film The Harvest (La Cosecha)

Zulema Lopez is a Michigan State university Graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Human Capital and Society from the Human Resources And Labor Relations college at MSU. Throughout her 23 years she has been able to overcome the harsh obstacles she faced as a migrant farm worker and has used her platform to advocate for child labor laws. Zulema participated in the documentary The Harvest (La Cosecha) at age 12, in which her life as a child migrant worker was documented to show the underlying issues of the child labor in the US. In  2018 she was a guest panelist at the 107th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland where she spoke on the issues of child labor in the US. Most recently in 2019, Zulema returned to her home state of Texas to attend two conferences where she shared her story to help motivate students with a similar background. Zulema continues to be a child labor activist in hopes that there will be change to come.

Norma Flores López, Chief Programs Officer at Justice for Migrant Women

Norma Flores López grew up as a child of a migrant farmworker family from South Texas. She began working in the fields at the age of 12, where she continued working until she graduated from high school. She has long been an active advocate for migrant farmworker children’s rights and continues to raise awareness on issues affecting the farmworker community. Norma serves on the Board of Directors for the National Consumers League, is the chair of the Child Labor Coalition’s Domestic Issues Committee, and the representative for the United States on the Board of Directors for Global March Against Child Labour. Prior to joining Justice for Migrant Women, Norma was the Governance and Development/Collaboration Manager at East Coast Migrant Head Start Project, a co-founder of The Foundation for Farmworkers, served on the Board of Directors for the National Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Association, and was director of the Children in the Fields Campaign at the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs.

In the film, we meet Sid, Taee, and AR, three teens currently being held in a Richmond, VA detention center who are offered the chance to become activists speaking truth to power. Participating in a local arts organizations’ program, Performing Statistics, they are taught by different artists to deliver their powerful, authentic messages to the public, law enforcement, and government officials using their art, including a virtual reality jail cell they’ve helped create.

She began her journey with Performing Statistics at ART 180 as a program assistant for a hip hop class using her skills as an emcee and rapper to support kids at the middle school level. She soon was leading her own hip hop music and writing programs. When Performing Statistics was founded in 2014, Gina was the first program leader assisting in the implementation of the earliest creative programs and was promoted to Program Coordinator in 2015 after the project received its first major grant. After just a year, Gina became Program Manager and helped grow the project with a particular emphasis on the youth development and credible messenger mentoring aspects. A Night of Shining a Light: Shine Global’s 5th Annual Gala

On Thursday, October 10 we threw the fifth annual Shine Global Gala with the theme “Why we Shine a light,” bringing together filmmakers, Shine Global supporters, and champions of children’s rights highlighting our mission of sharing stories of children and their families’ resilience through film.

Following cocktails with music performed by Don Sarlin, Shine Global board members Marilyn DeLuca (Chair of the Development Committee) and Anne Prost (Chair of the Board) kicked off the evening by explaining the need for donors and philanthropists to support Shine Global’s type of storytelling, and what that support has accomplished in the last 14 years.

Shine Global co-founder Albie Hecht acknowledged just how many amazing stories are currently being told by talented filmmakers, which makes it tough to choose which films are going to be Shine Global films. “So what do we look for? We look for stories that shine a light on untold issues and we look for them to take us to places we have never gone before.  And finally, we look for compelling characters that charge the stories with emotion and a cinematic feel like you normally find in a fiction film,” he explained.  He then introduced three current projects of Shine Global: Virtually Free by director André Robert Lee focusing on the need for alternatives to sending kids to jail; an upcoming film by directors/producers Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci filmed over a decade and telling the coming-of-age story of an undocumented boy in New York City; and a film still in production about the Rohingya refugee crisis by Director Taimi Arvidson and Producer Brette Ragland.

Executive Director and Co-Founder Susan MacLaury highlighted the urgency of the moment in supporting storytelling about children’s issues and premiered a new video about why Shine Global “Shines a Light.”  Reflecting on recent governments lack of support for the neediest in the world, Susan declared, “This is a time for personal and group activism, to fight the good fight on behalf of our neediest children. It is not only right, but essential, that we each pay attention to those who are suffering and do what we can to end it.”  And affirming that “These are Shine Global’s children now and we will keep faith with them and do all that we can to make sure their hope is rewarded.”

The Spirt Award was presented to Dario Spina, the Chief Marketing Officer of Viacom Velocity and a long time Shine Global board member for his dedication to using the power of media to transform children’s lives.  Speaking about what makes Shine Global unique, Dario said “the stories we tell are typically through the eyes of a child…. we find that it’s more impactful to tell the individual stories of these amazing children, that give a voice to and represent potentially millions of kids and their families that are affected by these issues…in the end, what’s more important than making this world a better place for our children? Nothing!”

And that’s what made the evening so inspiring.  A ballroom full of people who believe what Dario believes – that we must act now to better the lives of children around the world – and in the power of film and storytelling to be a part of that change.

If you missed the gala, you can still contribute to Shine Global’s mission by becoming a member or making a donation before the end of the year!

And check out the photos from the event on our Facebook page!

Sunny’s belief in children’s resilience and their right to self-determination has never wavered.”

A gifted storyteller herself, Sunny has an impressive depth of knowledge about the criminal justice system. She has won two Emmys for her work as a correspondent for ABC’s Good Morning America and as a Correspondent for the ABC News Special, The President and the People. Sunny was born in the South Bronx and became the first in her family to attend college. She began her career as an appellate law clerk after graduating from Notre Dame Law School and went on to become a trial attorney for the Justice Department and a federal prosecutor. During her time as Assistant U.S. Attorney, Attorney General Janet Reno awarded the Special Achievement Award to Sunny for her prosecution of child sexual predators.

Since its founding in 2005 Shine Global has taken action on child labor, child abuse, and child soldiering; shared moving stories about the effects of war, parental incarceration, undocumented immigration, and homelessness on children; and highlighted the power of music, dance, and sports to overcome intolerance. In all its projects, Shine Global celebrates children’s resilience.
