Shine Global Announces Four Nominees for First-Ever Children’s Resilience in Film Award

$25K Prize Will Be Awarded to Winning Picture that Shines a Light on Children & Families in Unprecedented Circumstances 

NEW YORK, NY – Shine Global, the non-profit media company behind Academy Award-winning and Emmy Award-winning films Inocente (2012) and War/Dance (2005), has announced the four nominees for the first-ever Children’s Resilience in Film Award, one of whom will be selected as the inaugural winner in October. The following nominees were chosen from a pool of feature-length film submissions from 32 countries across the world: 

Gabi: Between Ages 8 and 13 (Sweden/Denmark/Norway)
Directed by Engeli BrobergGabi: Between Ages 8 and 13 follows the remarkable Gabi over the course of five formative years as she wrestles with society’s stereotypes about boys and girls.
LIFT(USA)
Directed by David J. PetersenFilmed over the course of ten years, LIFT shines a spotlight on the invisible story of homelessness in America through the eyes of a group of young home-insecure ballet dancers enrolled in New York Theater Ballet’s LIFT program, and the mentor who inspires them, internationally-renowned ballet dancer Steven Melendez.
Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy (Vietnam)
Directed by Ham Tran
Vietnam’s first-ever kids science fiction film, Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy, follows an 8-year-old boy who overcomes the loss of his mother when he helps an alien girl get back home.
Scenes From the Glittering World (USA)
Directed by Jared Jakins
Following three Indigenous students, Scenes from the Glittering World is a meditation on adolescence, trauma, and the power of connecting with an isolated Navajo homeland.

Shine Global will hold special screenings of the four nominated films in New York City from September 15-18. The winner will be selected by an esteemed jury panel composed of:

  • Kay Wilson Stallings, Executive Vice President of Creative and Production, Sesame Workshop
  • Maria Perez Brown, Head of Kids & Family, TIME Studios
  • Amy Kennedy, Children’s rights activist, educator, and 2020 Democratic Congressional Nominee
  • Scott Feinberg, Senior Awards Analyst, The Hollywood Reporter
  • Jana Sue Memel, Academy-Award winning producer (Ray’s Male Heterosexual Dance Hall (1987), Lieberman in Love (1995)

The winning film will be announced at a VIP awards show breakfast at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, California on October 20. The winner will be awarded a $25,000 cash prize. 

The first-of-its-kind award will honor the preeminent filmmakers who masterfully highlight and celebrate the inspiring strength, creativity, and power of children across the world. Amidst an ongoing pandemic that has disrupted everyday life and social-emotional development for billions of children globally, and a humanitarian crisis that has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee Ukraine, the Children’s Resilience in Film Award seeks to shed much-needed light on the uplifting, inspiring stories of children who offer global audiences hope and the talented filmmakers who tell them.

The inaugural 2022 Children’s Resilience in Film Award is sponsored in part by media partner The Hollywood Reporter who will uplift these powerful, culture-shifting films to receive the recognition they deserve; Paramount Pictures; Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein Lezcano Bobb & Dang; Mattel Inc; pocket.watch; Quest Pacifica; Jim and Kimberly Caccavo; Ellen and Wendell Maddrey; DreamWorks Animation; and hospitality partner Sunset Marquis Hotel.

Films from 32 countries across the world have entered to compete for the Children’s Resilience in Film Award, nominees, all feature-length films released in the last year, will be selected and announced later this month. Meet our 2022 Summer Interns, Craig and Mya

Craig Cosentino
My name is Craig Cosentino and I am the Shine Global Content/Outreach intern! I am so honored to be a part of Shine Global. I am going into my sophomore year at Columbia University and am turning 19 this July 18th. I am an intended film major with a minor in music and have been acting, writing, and singing since I was 10 years old. Musicals, musical theater, plays, acting, singing, writing, editing, directing, and film, have been my passions from elementary school to now in college. I want to be a filmmaker when I finish undergrad at Columbia prioritizing acting, writing, directing, and editing throughout my career. 

Mya Hoist
Hi, I’m Mya. I’m an incoming senior at New York University. I am an Applied Psychology major with a double minor in producing and media communication. I have an interest in TV production and dream of one day being a show-runner. During my free time, I love to do creative writing, film photography, fashion design, and collect pins. So far I have over 50 enamel pins in my collection.

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Shine Global, the non-profit media company behind Academy Award-winning and Emmy Award-winning films, announced the launch of the Children’s Resilience in Film Award. The first-of-its-kind award will honor the preeminent filmmakers who masterfully highlight and celebrate the inspiring strength, creativity, and power of children across the world. Amidst an ongoing pandemic that has disrupted everyday life and social-emotional development for billions of children globally and a humanitarian crisis that has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee Ukraine, the Children’s Resilience in Film Award seeks to shed much-needed light on the uplifting, inspiring stories of children who offer global audiences hope and the talented filmmakers who tell them.

“Since we started Shine Global back in 2005, we’ve had the privilege of meeting and telling the stories of inspiring, resilient children growing up in the crossroads of diverse political, cultural, and social forces,” said Shine Global Co-Founder and Emmy-winning producer Susan MacLaury. “Telling these stories is no easy feat but it’s incredibly important. That’s why we’re honored to introduce the Children’s Resilience in Film Award to not only honor these visionary filmmakers and their outstanding work but empower the next generation of filmmakers to realize the power in children’s narratives.”

The inaugural 2022 Children’s Resilience in Film Award is sponsored in part by The Hollywood Reporter, a media partner, which will uplift these powerful, culture-shifting films to receive the recognition they deserve. An open call for film submissions to be considered for nomination opens today, March 16th, and will close on May 31. Five nominees, all feature length films released in the last year, will be selected and announced later this summer. An esteemed jury composed of leading film industry experts, children’s rights activists, and distinguished youth voices will select the winner. The five nominees will screen their films in New York City from September 15th to 18th. The winner will be announced at a VIP awards show breakfast in Los Angeles, California and will be awarded a $25,000 cash prize on October 20th.

Through its films, Shine Global has celebrated children’s resilience and tackled issues of child labor, child abuse, child soldiering, parental incarceration, undocumented immigration, and homelessness since its founding in 2005. Shine Global’s first film War/Dance (2007) – a documentary profiling Acholi children refugees living in Patongo, the northern Ugandan refugee camp under military protection from terrorist group Lord’s Resistance Army – debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary, and was awarded two Emmys in 2010. Inocente (2012) told a coming-of-age story of a 15-year-old homeless and undocumented girl in California received the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject).

Deadlines and Eligibility
All entries must be submitted at https://filmfreeway.com/ShineGlobalChildrensResilienceinFilm/ by May 31 at 11:59pmET. Submissions must be full feature-length films – animation, documentary, or fiction – released in the last year in order to be eligible for nomination.

Meet our 2022 Spring Interns joining us remotely this semester:

Leah Robins
Leah Robins is a senior at Columbia University studying philosophy and sociology. Originally from Connecticut, she is passionate about combining what she has learned through her majors and her interest in documentary film to create media that is impactful and educational. Leah wanted to intern at Shine Global because she strongly believes that their mission of telling stories about children and families that go unheard is a great way to educate people on social issues and inspire activism.

Anne Savage
Anne Savage is a senior at Tufts University with a major in English and a minor in French. She found Shine Global’s mission of advocating for children and sharing their stories through the medium of film to be compelling and important. As a marketing intern, she hopes to help Shine Global’s content reach a wider audience, so that more people can watch and be inspired by these films.
