How to Watch

In The Wrong Light, a charismatic activist leads a globally-regarded NGO that provides shelter and education for girls rescued from brothels in Northern Thailand. But as the filmmakers meet the girls and their families, discrepancies begin to emerge and the story takes an unexpected turn.

Josie Swantek Heitz – Director & Producer

Josie Swantek Heitz is a documentary filmmaker and commercial director. In 2010, she co-founded her own production company, Run Riot Films, with two colleagues she met while working at National Geographic Television. Together, they have been making films for organizations and brands including Ogilvy, IBM, Intel, Huffington Post, EPIX, Samsung and The Smithsonian Channel. She has had the great fortune of traveling extensively in her career, including to co-produce the Academy Award®-nominated, Emmy®-winning feature documentary, War/Dance (2007) and the short documentary, War/Dance Returns (2009), both with Shine Global. She also directed the documentary In the Moment: Amar’e Stoudemire (2013) for broadcast on EPIX and Storm the Gates (2019).

Dave Adams – Director/Cinematographer

Dave Adams is a director and cinematographer based in Brooklyn, NY. He has served as Director or Cinematographer on projects for Samsung, IBM, Intel, Universal Music Group, Huffington Post, Obama Campaign, National Geographic, Discovery, and EPIX. His film The Unconditional was nominated for a Critic’s Choice Documentary Award in 2019.

Susan MacLaury – Moderator

Co-Founder and Executive Director of Shine Global Susan was Producer of The Wrong Light as well as of Shine Global’s latest film Virtually Free. She also has Executive Produced the Emmy Award®-winning, Academy Award®-nominated documentary War/Dance, the Academy Award® Winner Inocente, The Harvest (La Cosecha), 1 Way Up in 3D, Liyana and The Eagle Huntress and co-produced Tre Maison Dasan. She is also the producer of The Wrong Light and Virtually Free. Susan is in charge of the educational outreach and social advocacy efforts for all of Shine Global’s films. She is dually degreed in social work administration and health education and https://valtrexlab.com was associate professor of health education at Kean University from 1994 through 2013.
