Shine Global’s 3rd Annual Gala

Last Wednesday, October 11, 2017, we hosted Shine Global’s 3rd annual gala at a private club called 3 West. With more than 150 guests, filmmakers, staff and volunteers and a wonderful trio of Julliard students in attendance, our party went into full swing early and built from there!

We’re so honored that 10 of our 2017 filmmakers from The Election Effect, The Difference, Liyana, Tre Maison Dasan (working title), and Virtually Free (working title) were able to join us to share their works and chat privately with our guests. Thanks to generous donations of experiences and destinations by board members and friends, auctioned by the incomparable Lucas Hunt, Shine raised over $100,000 in donations and pledges that will help us in our work next year to transform children’s lives through film. It was a night to remember!

Thank you to everyone who came to our 3rd Annual Gala last week! It was a huge success and a fun and inspirational evening!

Shine’s 2nd Annual Party – What a Wonderful Evening!

Shine’s 2nd Annual Party – What a Wonderful Evening!

From the moment we first saw the Helen Mills Event Space on West 26th Street, we knew it was the perfect venue for our second annual Shine Global party. Large, airy, with high ceilings, a beautiful deco bar, it is very elegant. Add a wonderful staff – especially Brittany and Scoop – and you have the makings for a special night.

Arriving, the first thing we saw was the fantastic signage over the doors highlighting our sponsors, Shine, and our movies. We had a great crowd – a lot of friends but many new faces as well – and we really appreciated everyone’s attentiveness throughout our presentation. After awarding two long-time volunteers for their service to Shine, we introduced the filmmakers for Shine’s three most current films.

Beginning with Aaron and Amanda Kopp, filmmakers of Liyana, and their very talented animator, Shofela Coker, we also heard from The Wrong Light directors, Josie Swantek Heitz and Dave Adams. We watched trailers for both films before Albie introduced the third, The Eagle Huntress, directed by Otto Bell and Stacey Reis. Otto and Stacey were able to stop by early in the evening before going to do Q&As at two theaters as the film has just opened in NY and LA.

We hope our guests had as much fun as we did. Albie and I want to thank our sponsors – Spike, CNN, Epix, Freeform TV and A. Jaffe Jewelers. Our appreciation also goes to our wonderful board of directors, our board of governors, our host committee, and volunteers. And most of all I want to thank Alex Blaney and Kiana Jackson, without whose help Shine would have ground to a halt years ago. Finally, a special thanks to my dear friend, Ruth Sarlin, for her second tour as silent auction coordinator, and to Board of Directors member Anne Prost for her moving statement about Shine.

Thanks to everyone – especially our sponsors – we doubled our donations from last year! Let’s do this again next year…

The Wrong Light to Have World Premiere at Cleveland International Film Festival

One of the must-see documentaries set for world premiere at the Cleveland International Film Festival this weekend is The Wrong Light a riveting film about a man who leads a highly-regarded NGO that aids girls who have been trafficked for sex. What begins as a positive profile of a hero of-sorts turns into a fascinating expose.

NEW DOCUMENTARY TAKES A SHOCKING TURN AND TURNS THE TABLES ON A WIDELY CELEBRATED CHILD ADVOCATE

In a world of “clicktivism” and armchair activism, NGOs globally often feel pressure to play to the public’s appetite for sensational stories that generate sympathy.

The Wrong Light, the latest documentary from the producers behind the Oscar®-winning short doc Inocente, will have its world premiere in competition at the 40th Cleveland International Film Festival with screenings on April 2 and 3.

From the Shine Global production team and first time feature directors Josie Swantek Heitz and Dave Adams, The Wrong Light unfolds as a mystery while exploring the dark side of child advocacy through the story of a charismatic “activist,” Mickey Choothesa, who claims to rescue at-risk Thai girls, but is instead exposed as having misrepresented them for his own gain.

SYNOPSIS (From CIFF Program): The Wrong Light begins as a positive spotlight on Mickey Choothesa and his nonprofit, the Children’s Organization of Southeast Asia (COSA), which aims to rescue young females from the deplorable sex trade in Thailand. He tells the filmmakers about his start as a war photographer, capturing images in the heat of battle. The horrors of war were less jarring to him than the fate of trafficked girls, he explains. Dubbed “Uncle Mickey” by the kids at COSA, Choothesa is heavily involved in their lives, providing education and shelter to those he deems at-risk. On paper, this seems like a slam dunk for an inspiring film about a man making a difference. But, as interviews with the girls and their families unfold, an unfortunate truth begins to emerge: Mickey isn’t who he seems. It becomes clear his intentions are far from pure, his mission less noble than previously presented. Ironically, his program is exploitative—the very thing he claims to fight against. This shocking documentary uncovers a wolf in sheep’s clothing, whose selfish actions are undermining the effort to end human trafficking.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM: We went to northern Thailand to film a story about two girls – Fon and Eye – whom we thought had been sold into the sex trade by their parents. Our guide was Mickey Choothesa. What we discovered instead is that Mickey has been deceiving both the public and those he claims to be helping. Since founding his non-profit organization, COSA, in 2005, Mickey has marketed it as a sanctuary for trafficked and at-risk girls. His dramatic rescue stories, featured in articles and shared online, inspire donors globally to support COSA’s work. In a world of “clicktivism” and armchair activism, NGOs globally often feel pressure to play to the public’s appetite for sensational stories that generate sympathy. Our film and outreach campaign will encourage debate about the ethics of effective aid, poverty porn, representation, exploitation, and how to ensure responsible support by people who want to help.

Oh what a night! Thanks for making our 10th Anniversary Party a Success

Nov 6 Shine Global

By Susan MacLaury, Executive Director

As one of our board members so aptly put it the day after our 10th anniversary party: “Oh what a night!”

It was a night that saw more than 130 of our closest friends and supporters join us to celebrate this wonderful journey that began in the spring of 2005 when Albie and I first decided to start Shine Global. Many who attended had been with us from the very start. Others joined us along the way, some only very recently, and all are meaningful to us.

We had a wonderful band – the Stingers – who rocked it. We had a terrific silent auction put together by a former board member and good friend. We had a great party-planning committee to help Alex, Kiana, and me make this happen. More than a dozen young volunteers came out that night to help us with everything from checking coats to dispensing gift bags to running out for 60 lb. of ice at the last minute!

And most meaningfully, we had a chance to thank some of the young people who were the subjects of our films as well as the directors, cinematographers and editors who brought their stories to life. I think all who attended would agree that they were the highlight of the evening.

So thank you all – those of you who were able to come and those who joined us in spirit. Albie and I are grateful for every one of you and we look forward to what the future brings.

Love, Susan

An amazing night celebrating 10 years of Shine Global with so many of our friends and supporters! All photos credit Amber Kayo.
