Shine Global’s latest project Home Is Somewhere Else is an animated feature documentary providing a window into the hearts and minds of young Dreamers and their undocumented families.

Pledge your support on Kickstarter today.  Time is running out to make this amazing film.

Home Is Somewhere Else invites discussion about the need for a new US migratory model based on respect for human rights for all. We plan to bring the film to both communities and decision makers to prompt dialogue about how the current immigration system harms families and must be replaced.

This 2D feature “animentary” features three personal stories about undocumented youth to highlight the complexities and challenges they face today. Voiced by the actual children and their families, the stories are woven together by spoken word poet Lalo “El Deportee,” the film’s host and MC whose vibrant “Spanglish” breaks codes, switches standards, and pushes the viewer to decipher his poems.

Each story has its own unique visual animation style drawn by three different teams. The animation allows us to truly see and feel these characters’ worst nightmares, alongside their colorful hopes and dreams for a better future.

Why We’re on Kickstarter Asking You to Join Us

Shine Global makes films to raise awareness, promote action, and inspire change. We do this by making powerful resources for classroom use as well as screenings to community organizations and to political and social influencers in support of pro-child legislation. Supporting this Kickstarter campaign is the first step in enabling us to advocate for young Dreamers and their families.

Because of the filmmakers’ dedication, they’ve been able to fund 80% of the film through the research, recording, and animation phases. But now we need your help to do the sound mix and music before we can output the film into all the formats we need to screen at festivals, theaters, and events starting next year.

We were able to successfully finish our Oscar®-winning short doc Inocente and the award-winning The Wrong Light and Virtually Free through Kickstarter with your help.  Now we need your help again to do equally well with Home is Somewhere Else.

Remember – we only get the funding if we reach our goal.  So pledge now! We need your help to make this film happen.

Spread the Word!

Your support of Home is Somewhere Else means the world to us!  Take a moment to follow us on social media — and share your support of this amazing project.

Meet our 2021 Fall Interns!

Meet our 2021 Fall Interns joining us remotely this semester: Eliya Brennan, Rachel Graves, and Eve Kinder.

Eliya Brennan
Eliya Brennan is a junior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, studying Screenwriting and Philosophy.  Eliya is originally from Watertown, Connecticut, and came to New York to work in film and television.  She hopes to use her background in philosophy to make meaningful and thought provoking content, which is why she was drawn to Shine Global’s mission.  She is excited to learn more about production and gain experience in content development, writing and editing.  She is excited to be working with Shine to tell impactful and important stories.

Rachel Graves
Rachel Graves is a senior at Adelphi University with a major in Communications, concentration in Digital Production, and a minor in Child and Family Studies. She wanted to work at Shine Global because she felt it combined her two fields of study and her two passions perfectly; creating media and content, as well being able to push for social justice and help disadvantaged communities. At Shine Global she is able to do both, while gaining valuable work experience that she is sure will help in her future endeavors.

Eve Kinder
Recently graduated from Sussex University with a BA Hons. in Social Anthropology, Eve Kinder’s passion for filmmaking that helps to amplify voices that are not normally heard was fueled by her focus on Ethnographic film, Migration, Middle Eastern and Minorities studies. Inspired by Shine Global’s approach – making films that are pivotal to a wider awareness raising initiative – she is loving her work as the outreach intern whilst learning how a not-for-profit organization works. She is dedicated to a career working with film that raises awareness of social issues, particularly those relating to children and that serves to empower marginalized voices.
