Meet our 2020 Fall Interns!

Meet our 2020 Fall Interns.  We’re excited to have them joining our team from laptops across the country.

Juliet Adelman
Originally from the Bay Area, Juliet Adelman is currently a junior at NYU Tisch studying Film & Television, with minors in the Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology as well as Spanish. At NYU, she has leadership positions in two clubs: The Stern-Tisch Entertainment Business Association and Fusion Film Festival, a festival that celebrates women in film. Her goal as a filmmaker has always been to tell real human stories guided by emotion and truth. At Shine Global, she is thrilled to combine that passion for storytelling with her interest in the business side of the film industry. As the Outreach intern, she hopes to learn more about effective communication and grassroots marketing.

Anthony Bosco
Anthony Bosco is a senior at Pepperdine University studying Media Production and Integrated Marketing Communications. As a double major he has learned how to impact people through film, and how to measure the effectiveness of messages through marketing. At Pepperdine, he has participated in multiple international programs, where he had the opportunity to travel the world while documenting his journeys through photography and film. Previously, Anthony has volunteered with youth education platforms and nonprofits that support youth development making his work with Shine Global an exciting way to continue those efforts. Anthony is from Stamford, Connecticut and is currently studying at home for a remote semester due to COVID-19. However, a good thing to come out of the unexpected circumstances is the opportunity for him to work with Shine Global as a marketing intern.

Naomi Roberts
Naomi Roberts is currently a junior at New York University studying Media, Culture and Communications with a minor in French studies. Originally from Seattle, Naomi found her passion and interest for film after working at a small production company last summer and after being featured in an NYU short film last fall. Today she is passionate about utilizing the power of visual storytelling to
unite people, to incite important conversations, and to challenge the status quo. This fall she joins Shine Global as a marketing intern and is excited to be a part of a company that uses film to uplift others and give a voice to the voiceless.

Goldera Surles
A New Jersey native, Goldera Surles is a Junior at Molloy College and is double majoring in Communications with a concentration in media and Spanish. Throughout her life, constantly watching theater plays and television, her love for films grew as she fell in love with various plots involving internal conflicts and mise-en-scene. Wanting to develop more of her technical behind-the-scenes skills in regards to filmmaking and editing, Goldera started at Shine Global in the Fall as the Production Intern. During any free time she has available, Goldera enjoys creating YouTube videos for her personal page and learning how to create graphic designs.

Notes from Susan: The Most Impactful Media Experience of My Childhood

By Susan MacLaury

I was 8 years old the morning of August 31, 1955 when I saw Emmett Till’s face on the front page of our newspaper. He had been beaten, mutilated and shot and his body thrown into the Tallahatchie River three days earlier because he was Black. It was the most impactful media experience of my childhood.

It was the moment when I first realized that if such violence could be wrought against one child, then all children, particularly children of color, were vulnerable. It was this awareness that drove me into social work, education, and 15 years ago, to co-founding Shine Global with my husband, Albie Hecht. We were determined to shine a light on stories of children and families around the world struggling to survive, and hopefully, to achieve their dreams. Today, 65 years after Emmett’s death, this goal is more important than ever.

It’s never easy to see children’s suffering. That’s why we’ve chosen to find the hope in the hardship and to accentuate kids’ resilience as they struggle against very long odds.

We do this because films and the discussions they inspire can make a difference in children’s lives. Four of our films have gone to Congress and influenced legislation, but it’s also our films’ quieter accomplishments that keep us going:

  • the young homeless teen who, after seeing Inocente, decided to start a support group for others who were also living in his shelter
  • the London government officials who opened their own bike racing programs for underserved kids after seeing 1 Way Up;
  • the corporate executive who recently commented that the screening of Virtually Free and subsequent discussion with its director “inspired our team to do more in the space of juvenile justice and alternative community programs.”

I hope you are nodding as you read this, and that you are moved to continue supporting Shine Global’s efforts to stand with children who deserve every ounce of the love and support we can give. Please donate now.

Thank you, and stay safe and well.

YouTube Unveils “Onyx Family Dinner” as Part of Black Voices Slate

The Onyx Family of 6

Pocket.watch’s Onyx Family Dinner, produced in association with Shine Global, will begin airing in 2021, and joins a slate of shows focused on elevating Black voices.

Join the Onyx Family for the dinner table conversation you wish your family had! This new Kids & Families series gathers the multi-generational family for plenty of fun and open conversations about life and what’s going on in the world over dinner. Weekly dinner guests broaden the conversation with different perspectives, thought provoking stories, subject matter expertise and valuable insights. Produced by pocket.watch in association with Shine Global, “Onyx Family Dinner” stars the Onyx Family and is executive produced by Keith Brown, Albie Hecht, the Onyx Family, and Chris M.Williams.

In the wake of massive protests for racial justice in 2020, YouTube announced a $100 million fund to amplify Black voices and perspectives on the platform. Now officially named the “#YouTubeBlack Voices Fund,” over the next three years they plan to “present fresh narratives that emphasize the intellectual power, authenticity, dignity and joy of Black voices, as well as to educate audiences about racial justice.”

Shine Global is proud to be a part of this work and bringing the Onyx Family Dinner to viewers across the US and around the world and we can’t wait to share the first episode in 2021.

Shine Global is an award-winning non-profit media company that gives voice to children and their families by sharing their stories of resilience to raise awareness, promote action, and inspire change.
